
"The Brier (national men’s championship) and the worlds were always the big draw for me, but the Olympics is next level. It was cool to see curling become a full medal sport in 1998 and watch our Canadian women win. We wanted to be bobsledders and we were being pushed around the kitchen," she says, laughing. "There are pictures of me and my brother (Kevin) when I was maybe four years old, watching the ‘92 Olympics (in Albertville, France) and sitting in a cardboard box. In 2018, Lawes partnered with John Morris to defeat Switzerland in the Olympic final of mixed-doubles curling in Pyeongchang. Tangible results are something else, entirely.

That’s what makes it all worthwhile."ĭreams are one thing. "If I can help someone follow their dreams, that’s the gold medal to me. If I can do it, others can do it, too," maintains Lawes. "It is so special to hear that from the next generation of athletes and inspires me to want to continue to push harder. Lawes, the only Canadian to claim curling titles in back-to-back Winter Games, says daring others to dream like she did is the most cherished spinoff of her Olympic pursuit.
